The adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is technically a spaniel, but he's included in the toy group instead of the sporting group (with the bigger spaniels) because Cavaliers were never bred as hunting dogs. Instead cutie Cavs were probably developed from pugs and toy spaniels, in order to serve as the perfect lap warmer.
